Distaff
The Princess followed the music through the castle, up to the top hallway of the farthest tower, while everyone else was asleep.
When she got to the top of the stairs, she found a strange lady, pouring herself tea. Next to her was a curious machine.
The Princess was always fascinated by machinery, even the simple clockwork rotisserie, that turned in the kitchen fireplace.
“What is it, Madame?” The Princess asked, mesmerized.
“It is a spinning wheel and spindle, my child,” the Lady said.
The Princess was so focused on the contraption, she didn’t notice the Lady's hoofs, horns, or wings.
“May I, Madame?” The Princess asked, before reaching to touch it. She thought the woman must be her fairy godmother, like in stories.
But, she had only read happy stories about good faeries. She knew very little of the wider world and the people in it.
“But, of course,” the Lady smiled, her eyes glistening, like ice.
“It is an easy skill to learn, but difficult to master.” She laughed.
“But, be careful,” the Lady warned. “It is sharp, and may bite."

Notes:
[1] Sleeping Beauty (French: La Belle au bois dormant "The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood") by Charles Perrault or "Little Briar Rose" (German: Dornröschen) by the Brothers Grimm is a classic fairy tale written by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, which involves a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment, and a handsome prince.
The version collected by the Brothers Grimm was an orally transmitted version of the originally literary tale published by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697.[1]
This in turn was based on Sun, Moon, and Talia by Italian poet Giambattista Basile (published posthumously in 1634), which was in turn based on one or morefolk tales.
The earliest known version of the story is Perceforest, composed between 1330 and 1344 and first printed in 1528.
[2] A distaff used in spinning. It holds the unspun fibers, keeping them untangled.
[3] As an adjective, the term distaff is used to describe the female side of a family.
[4] Except translated from the French, "Histoire par Le Chat", 1334 (A fictional fiction collection of fables.)
