Notes:
[1] “Ave atque vale!” (“Hail and Farewell!”) The last words of the poem Catullus 101, is a traditional military welcome and benediction celebrating a change of command.
[2] Tyrian purple is a purple natural dye. It comes from sea snails (Muricidae).
Tyrian purple was first used by the Phoenicians as early as 1570 BC.[2] The dye was valued because it’s colourfast. In Byzantium, it was restricted for the colouring imperial silks.[7]
[3] A cuirass is armour protecting the torso. The cuirass is made to rest on the hips; otherwise, its weight would exhaust its wearer.
[4] A Greave is armour protecting the leg.
[5] Chainmail [1] or mail is armour made of metal rings linked together to form a mesh. A coat of this mail is a hauberk.
