Aphrodite and Kerrie

“Everyone worships you, Auntie Aphrodite. They love you,” Kerrie sobbed. “But, everyone hates me, and my sisters, and our brother Thanatos!”

“So, everyone loves the goddess of love?” Aphrodite laughed. “Oh, Little Niece, do you think so? They blame me for everything. And, neglect us all, except Eros.”

“But, you give them a passion to live for,” her niece objected. “They just hate me. They even write songs about our cousins, The Valkyrie. But, they’re afraid of us.”

“Ah, Dearest, mortals fear everything they don’t understand, They’re such frail creatures,” she said, wrapping her arms around her niece and hugged her tightly to her. Kerrie felt warm all over.

“You and your siblings represent a journey to an unknown destination. That’s why they’re afraid. But, in the end, you can give them a peace, which few would know, otherwise.”

“And, you know what your Auntie Demeter and cousin Persephone would say?” Aphrodite said.

They both laughed, saying together, “It’s all part of the cycle.”

Notes:

[1] Keres (singular Ker) in Greek mythology are death-spirits, like the Valkyrie, in Norse mythology. The Keres are daughters of Nyx; and, their brother is Thanatos.

[2] Aphrodite, in Greek mythology is the Greek goddess of lovebeauty.

[3] Eros ("Desire")[3] in Greek mythology is the Greek god of love. His Roman counterpart is Cupid[4]. Some myths make him a primordial god, while in other myths, he is the son of Aphrodite. He was one of the winged love gods, Erotes.

[4] The Four Loves  by C. S. Lewis explores the nature of love in a Christian and, philosophical perspective, through thought experiments; [1] exploring St. John's assertion"God is Love": [1] Storge—empathy bond, [2] Philia—friend bond, [3] Eros—erotic bond, and [4] Agape—unconditional 'God' love.

(As the saying goes, “Charity never fails, because it’s never been tried.” 1 Corinthians 13:8, Bible Hub)

[5] The Valkyrie (Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain"), in Norse mythology, are a host of female figures who choose those who goes to Valhalla, with Odin, or with Freyja, in Fólkvangr.

[6] Persephone , in Greek mythology,  (also called Kore or Cora)[n 1] is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Queen of the underworld. In the Roman pantheon she is known as Proserpina.)

[7] Demeter, in ancient Greek religion and Greek mythology, is the goddess of the harvest and agriculture, who presides over grains, fertility, and as Thesmophoros the law.[3] She is one of the central figures of the Eleusinian Mysteries.

Memo:

This was the first idea that came to mind for the MMC October Challenge: The Story of Death. But, I wasn’t sure if it would be finished in time.

It actually started as a version of
The Judgment of Paris, by Peter Paul Rubens (1636, 38). In the early drafts, Persephone was giving her cousin Kerrie a Pomegranate; and, Demeter was beside her; but, it looked too crowded.

Then, it seemed like her Aunt was just having a quiet chat with her niece Kerrie, for a moment.

My apologies to Kerrie or Thanatos, or whoever it was I punched, when I was in and out of consciousness, that one time with pesticide poisoning.  (Ya, that time.)  No doubt we’ll meet again at Philippi. Or, next time, just send the dogs.

Until, we meet again...

Keres are kind of like Valkyries, but more brutal and violent - they are searching for wounded and dying, drink their blood and tear the souls from bodies violently, not like Thanatos, who collect them peacefully. But true is, Keres aren´t evil. They are just another important goddeses from Underworld.
